Why Your Youth Ministry Needs Isaac Asimov

I recently read a new found article written by science fiction writer Sir Issac Asimov on creativity and this quote stuck out to me

If a single individual present is unsympathetic to the foolishness that would be bound to go on at such a session, the others would freeze. The unsympathetic individual may be a gold mine of information, but the harm he does will more than compensate for that. It seems necessary to me, then, that all people at a session be willing to sound foolish and listen to others sound foolish.

Isaac Asimov – Essay on Creativity 1959

We need more foolish people in youth ministry.

Dreamers.

People who have outrageous ideas.

People who have not been at the church too long and don’t know the dream killing grind it can be.

People who’ve been saved long enough and still have the passion.

People who inspire others to be foolish as well.

People who say :

“What about..”

“Could we…”

“What if ….

We need people to say foolish things like Jesus

‘Rise up and walk”

“You feed them”

“Go into all the world”

“Do not worry about tomorrow”

Our youth ministries need people like you because dreaming all alone is exhausting.

Your Turn:

What is your team made up of? Workers? Dreamers? Both?

How do you invoke creativity from yourself? From your leaders?
