Praying The Apostle’s Creed Part 1: I Believe

The-Apostles-Creed

I learned the Apostles Creed as a child and my ability to quote it help participate with others in the weekly mass. I haven’t payed much attention to the creed as late. but there seems to have been a renewal of the creed with  the song We Believe by the Newsboys. When I was a kid,  Rich Mullen’s Creed was our generations anthem of what we believed.

The Apostle’s Creed is a statement of faith. Some believe it is called the Apostles Creed because their are 12 statements and that each of the 12 Apostles added one line to it. This is a great story but unlikely. More likely the Creed was created as a statement to be read at early Christian’s baptisms and to have them affirm each of the statements. The Creed has stood the test of time but could it be a useful part of your every day prayer time or as way to mix your prayer time up?

Here is the the creed as most churches read it today:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,born

of the Virgin Mary,suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried;

he descended into hell;

on the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;

from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and life everlasting. Amen

Here are some suggestions for using it in your prayer time or to pass along to your youth.

Part 1 : I Believe In God, the Father Almighty

Stat with repeating this a few times.

God, to many, is a faceless force. He’s the old man in the sky. A last ditch effort. But in this ancient creed, God has a role of Father.

Can you see God in a fatherly role

in your life? Can you call him Father with a sense of assurance?

He is also Father Almighty (having unlimited power; omnipotent, having very great power, influence,)

Sample Prayer

God you are not like other gods. You are not an impersonal force, you are my heavenly Father. A Father of great, unlimited  power and influence. What is there to worry about?  What is there to fear?

Amen
