Loki Episode 3: What Is Love To A Loki

6 · 25 · 21

Loki’s episode three was not my favorite episode, so far, but it was a good one. I’ll stay away from any spoilers if you have not watched the episode yet. Loki catches up to his variant Sylvie and talk quite a bit about love, of all things, as they get know each other.

So, what does Loki, the god of mischief know about love? Not much it appears. Here’s a small bit of dialogue to get us started,

Sylvie: Love is mischief, then.

Loki: No. Love is…Something I might have to have another drink to think about.

Loki is stumped about love. I think we’re all a little stumped about what love is but if you read the Bible, there is no ambiguity about what/who love is or what love does.

What love is or what is love (cue Haddaway) or better still, who is love?

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” I John 4:7,8 English Version Translation

Love is from God and God, himself, is love.

There is no identity crisis with God as there is with Loki. God does not stumble over his words and does not need a few drink to explain himself.

What does love do?

“God has shown us his love by sending his only Son into the world so that we could have life through him. This is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the payment for our sins.” I John 4:9,10 God Word Translaton

Love gives, love sacrifices. God loved us enough to give his one and only son for our sins. Love is selfless. Love is not about us, our goals, our dreams or our self preservation. Love lays self down every day for someone else; our spouses, our kids, our friends, strangers, etc.

Love does not know color, gender or creeds. It sees past our prejudices.

Here is Loki’s interpretation of love, after a few drinks,

Loki: Love is a dagger, it’s a weapon to be wielded far away or up close. You can see yourself in it. It’s beautiful until it makes you bleed. But ultimately, when you reach for it,

Sylvie: It isn’t real. Love is an imaginary dagger.

Clearly, Loki has never read I Corinthians 13.

Love is patient. Love is kind. Love isn’t jealous. It doesn’t sing its own praises. It isn’t arrogant. It isn’t rude. It doesn’t think about itself. It isn’t irritable. It doesn’t keep track of wrongs. 6 It isn’t happy when injustice is done, but it is happy with the truth. Love never stops being patient, never stops believing, never stops hoping, never gives up. Love never comes to an end. I Corinthians 13: 6-8

Listen, like Loki, you may be a little confused about what love is and what love does and have a hard time explaining it or putting it into words; but when you know God, love just flows and won’t need explaining.

Let love flow today.
