We’ll get lost in the weeds. The power to make spiritual and moral decisions fades; and we are left in a weakened state unable to do anything which leads to the second part of the proverb.

I think part of the solution, to not becoming complacent, is having a healthy self esteem. We must always believe we can make a difference and change, if not our circumstances, ourselves.
Waywardness and complacency are a deadly combination that can take down a career, a business, or a nation. Fight them with everything you have.
